What You're Training On

HMI is the screen. SCADA is everything feeding it.

A Human Machine Interface (HMI) is the screen an operator actually looks at and touches — a MIMIC of the process, live values, alarms and controls, built to be understood at a glance. It can be as simple as a small panel mounted on a single machine, or as advanced as a multi-touch operator station.

SCADA — Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition — is the layer underneath: the system that pulls data from field sensors through PLCs and controllers, pushes commands back out to actuators, and presents all of it through HMI screens. Where HMI is local and per-machine, SCADA is typically plant-wide — covering real-time and historical trending, alarm management, and reporting across every connected device.

The two are closely related and often talked about together, but they answer different questions: HMI asks "what does the operator see right now?"SCADA asks "what does the whole plant's data tell us, now and over time?"
