A DCS is what runs the plant when the plant never really stops.
A Distributed Control System is the control architecture built for continuous and batch process manufacturing — oil refining, petrochemicals, power generation, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and food & beverage plants where a process runs for days or months at a stretch, not a fixed machine cycle.
Unlike a single controller running one machine, a DCS spreads control across many processors positioned close to the plant floor, all talking to each other over a high-speed network and reporting into shared operator and engineering consoles. That's the "distributed" in the name — control intelligence lives near the process, while supervision and configuration stay centralized.
The tradeoff that defines DCS design is hot redundancy: controllers, power supplies and networks are built in pairs so a single card or module failure never stops the plant. That's the core difference from a PLC-based system, and the main reason large continuous plants are built on DCS rather than PLC architecture.
